Seeking Small Daily Miracles

From my vantage points as a teacher, I am witness to small daily miracles. Other than parents, few folks have access to this window the same was a teacher does. As I watch students initially struggle with new ideas, concepts or changes in thinking or behaving, I have also witnessed the joys of meeting challenges and difficulties with success. That's what keeps us teachers going!

I celebrate Brett's conscious self-editing for capital and ending punctuation when recording his lastest thoughts and questions, Josuah's success with learning to use working backwards as a problem solving technique, and Elizabeth's relearning the correct difference of 10-8. I see that Ann is thinking deeply about her independent reading and recording thoughtful notes and questions. I see many children begin to understand why and how scientists change their thinking and ideas after working through boat building challenges with twelve inch squares of foil.

The children and I share our hopes and dreams, goals and obstacles in order to live and work successfully together in 20'x20' square classroom we share daily with each other. I witness miraculous poetry that Bobby shares about a fall leaf and I can make connections to his own feelings towards his mother and his family. I get goose bumps. I enjoy the sense of humor that eight - ten year olds possess in their own interpretation of the world around us. I hear deep thougths that adults could learn much from in terms of how to make this world a fair and better place to live. All of this because I am a teacher and seek small miracles each day.

I am inviting you to participate in this process. I would like to share my observations and thoughts with you parents and some other teachers through this blog site. My intention is to share my observations and thoughts on what's happening in our class and invite you to share your thoughts as well so that we may develop a collaboration to make the learning in our classroom as rich as possible. I am experimenting with the format and security of this venue and will be seeking input from you as to how to identify the children and possibly other formats for us to colloboratively communicate. I've used psuedonyms for the children so far. Please let me know if you would like to participate.
